Elon Musk says Tesla prices are increasing because of supply chain disruptions across the auto industry
- The prices of some Tesla models are going up because of the supply chain issues, CEO Elon Musk said.
- Tesla earlier this month boosted prices on its Model 3 and Model Y.
- The global auto industry has been hit hard by supply chain issues, notably a shortage of computer chips.
- See more stories on Insider's business page.
Prices on some Tesla models are increasing due to global supply chain disruptions in the auto industry, particularly with raw materials, Elon Musk said on Twitter Monday.
Musk's explanation came in response to a Twitter user who said they didn't like the "direction" the company was going in by "raising prices of vehicles but removing features like lumbar for the Model Y."
The Tesla and SpaceX CEO responded: "Prices increasing due to major supply chain price pressure industry-wide. Raw materials especially."
-Elon Musk (@elonmusk) May 31, 2021
Tesla earlier this month boosted prices on its Model 3 and Model Y, Electrek reported. It was the fifth price increase on the models in a matter of months.
The global auto industry has been hit hard by supply chain issues, notably a shortage of computer chips, due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
The semiconductor shortage is expected to cost the global automotive industry $110 billion in 2021. Carmakers including Ford and GM have cut their earnings expectations by billions of dollars.
Tesla has not been immune to the impacts of the shortage. Last month, during the electric car company's earnings call, Musk said supply chain issues were causing "insane difficulties" and the chip shortage had impacted Tesla's manufacturing goals. Musk recently tweeted that the delivery date for Tesla's Model S Plaid, the carmaker's quickest vehicle, was pushed back by one week to June 10.
Tesla is now in talks to pay supplies upfront for computer chips, the Financial Times reported. Musk has also shown interest in vertical integration. Last year, the company announced plans to make its own battery cells and even bought land in Nevada to mine for its own battery-grade lithium.

Republican Rep. Louie Gohmert downplayed the Capitol riot at a major QAnon conference and posed for photos with a conspiracy theorist influencer
- Rep. Louie Gohmert, a Texas Republican, spoke at a major QAnon conference on Saturday in Dallas.
- Gohmert downplayed the Jan. 6 Capitol riot to the crowd of QAnon supporters and MAGA proponents.
- The congressman spoke in front of a large image of the event's logo, which featured the QAnon mantra "Where we go one, we go all."

Rep. Louie Gohmert, a Texas Republican, spoke at a major QAnon conference on Saturday in Dallas and downplayed the January 6 Capitol riot to a crowd that included major conspiracy theorist influencers.
The congressman condemned his colleagues in the House who are pushing for a bipartisan commission to investigate the Capitol riot and argued that the events of Jan. 6 paled in comparison to both the 9/11 terror and Pearl Harbor attacks, according to reporters and watchdog groups covering the event. Earlier this month, Gohmert joined many of his Republican colleagues in blocking the creation of a Jan. 6 commission.
Gohmert took photos at the event with QAnon supporters, including Zak Paine, the host of a popular QAnon show RedPill78, who has said he stormed the Capitol on Jan. 6.
Gohmert spoke on stage at the Omni Hotel in Dallas in front of a large image of the event's logo, which featured the QAnon mantra "Where we go one, we go all," abbreviated to "WWG1WGA."
The phrase was taken from the 1996 film "White Squall" and is widely used by QAnon adherents to show their support for the far-right conspiracy theory. Gohmert and three other Texas House Republicans voted against a congressional resolution condemning QAnon last fall.
A prominent QAnon influencer, John Sabal, aka "QAnon John," and his girlfriend, Amy, organized the conference. Sabal detailed his support for QAnon during an October 2020 interview with Insider at a Trump rally in Middletown, PA.
-Alex Kaplan (@AlKapDC) May 29, 2021
"I want to make [the Conservative Political Action Conference] look like a puppy show," Sabal told a far-right podcast host last month of his QAnon conference.
The three-day conference featured several prominent QAnon promoters, including Trump's former national security advisor, Michael Flynn, and ex-Trump attorney Sidney Powell. The chairman of the Texas Republican Party, Allen West, also spoke at the events.
The pro-Trump QAnon conspiracy theory, which claims that major Democrats and celebrities are operating a global pedophile ring, is closely tied to the Capitol riot. Forty people arrested for entering the Capitol on Jan. 6 are QAnon adherents. Rosanne Boyland, a rioter who died on the steps of the Capitol, was an avid QAnon believer, according to Boyland's family and friends.
Spokespeople for Gohmert and House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy didn't immediately respond to Insider's requests for comment.
A reporter at a Texas CBS affiliate said that a member of Gohmert's staff falsely told the outlet that the congressman did not attend the event.
Gohmert has promoted the false claim that the 2020 presidential election was stolen from Trump, and repeatedly defended the Capitol rioters and others accused of unlawfully entering the Capitol as part of the pro-Trump mob on Jan. 6. Other Republican lawmakers have described the rioters as harmless "tourists" and otherwise defended the attack on Congress.

Nikki Haley called VP Kamala Harris 'unprofessional and unfit' for telling people to 'enjoy the long weekend'
- Former South Carolina governor Nikki Haley criticized Vice President Kamala Harris on Sunday.
- Harris tweeted "enjoy the long weekend," prompting Haley to call her "unprofessional and unfit."
- Harris tweeted Sunday, before Haley's criticism, about the meaning of the Memorial Day holiday.
- See more stories on Insider's business page.
Former South Carolina governor Nikki Haley had a go at Vice President Kamala Harris on Sunday over well wishes she sent out for the holiday weekend.
Harris shared a tweet on Saturday that featured a photo of herself and the message: "Enjoy the long weekend."
Haley, who served as President Donald Trump's ambassador to the United Nations, seemingly took issue with the tweet. She retweeted it and wrote, "Unprofessional and unfit."
It's not clear exactly what Haley didn't like about the tweet, but some Twitter users expressed disapproval that Harris tweeted about the long weekend instead of what Memorial Day is about.
-Nikki Haley (@NikkiHaley) May 30, 2021
Memorial Day takes place annually on the last Monday of May to honor and mourn United States military personnel who died in the line of duty.
Harris tweeted on Sunday morning, hours before Haley's criticism, about the meaning of the national holiday.
"Throughout our history our service men and women have risked everything to defend our freedoms and our country. As we prepare to honor them on Memorial Day, we remember their service and their sacrifice," she said.
For her part, Haley had not tweeted about the Memorial Day holiday as of Sunday night.
Haley, a Republican, has been a widely speculated candidate for a presidential run in 2024. However, she said if Trump runs she will support him, despite previously criticizing him after the Capitol riot and telling Politico: "He went down a path he shouldn't have, and we shouldn't have followed him, and we shouldn't have listened to him. And we can't let that ever happen again."

Senator Ted Cruz, in Israel, calls on Biden to deliver more weapons to the country
- Israel and Hamas have been accused of war crimes for their tactics during 11 days of fighting.
- More than 200 Palestinians and 12 Israelis were killed.
- Sen. Ted Cruz is in Israel to look at the damage and called on Biden to support Israel's military.
- See more stories on Insider's business page.
GOP Senators Ted Cruz and Bill Hagerty traveled to Israel to look at damage left behind after 11 days of clashes with Hamas.
In a video, Cruz called on President Joe Biden to deliver more weapons to the country.
"Radical Democrats are wrong. Israel has the undeniable right to defend itself," Cruz wrote in a tweet.
-Senator Ted Cruz (@SenTedCruz) May 30, 2021
Israel and the Palestinian militant group Hamas agreed to a cease-fire on May 20 after 11-cays of fighting killed at least 232 Palestinians, including 65 children. Nearly 2,000 people in Gaza were injured. At least 12 people in Israel were also killed, including two children and a soldier.
Israeli airstrikes destroyed residential buildings and civilian centers, including a building that housed news outlets like the Associated Press. Hamas launched thousands of missiles indiscriminately into Israel, the vast majority blocked by Israel's iron dome defense system.
Human rights groups have accused both parties of committing what could amount to war crimes with their fighting tactics.
Last week, Cruz introduced a resolution approving arms sales to Israel after Democrats voiced concern and moved to block a $735 million sale of precision-guided weapons.
"Our Israeli allies have just completed another round of fighting against Iran-backed Hamas terrorists who fired over 4,000 rockets into Israel. Israel has the solemn obligation to defend its citizens, and the United States has a duty to continue to support and bolster them as they do so," Cruz said in a May 26 statement. "Sadly, Democrats in both the House and the Senate are choosing to pacify their anti-Israel base by opposing this critical support. I call on my Democrat colleagues to choose a side and support this commonsense resolution voicing Congressional approval for these two sales."
The arms sale was approved by Biden's administration prior to the start of fighting.
Democrats, including Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, said the US had been sending billions of dollars in weaponry to Israel for decades "without ever requiring them to respect basic Palestinian rights."
Ocasio-Cortez said the US is a direct contributor to "the death, displacement, and disenfranchisement of millions."
In a video, Cruz called on Biden to send Israel to support to bolster their Iron Dome by replenishing the system's missiles, to "ensure Israel has adequate supply to defend itself," claiming Hamas alone committed war crimes and used civilians as human shields, including journalists and media buildings.
He was referencing a claim by the Israeli Defense Forces that they struck a building that housed the AP and Al Jazeera because Hamas militants were allegedly using the building for military intelligence purposes.
The building's owner said there was no evidence Hamas was using the building.
The IDF did not provide any evidence to support their claim.

- Elon Musk said SpaceX's offshore launch platform called Deimos is under construction.
- In a tweet Sunday, he said the platform could be ready for launch operations next year.
- The platform is set to be used for the SpaceX Starship rockets.
- See more stories on Insider's business page.
Elon Musk said that SpaceX's ocean spaceport, called Deimos, is under construction and could begin launch operations next year.
Musk tweeted about the offshore launch platform, which is part of the forthcoming Starship rocket system, on Sunday in response to a rendered image shared by a fan.
The platform is intended to be used as a launch and landing platform for the SpaceX Starship, a spacecraft that Musk intends to send to Mars. SpaceX purchased two oil rigs off the coast of Texas earlier this year to serve as "floating" launchpads for the Starship. The platforms have been named Deimos and Phobos, after Mars' moons.
-Elon Musk (@elonmusk) May 30, 2021
The latest prototype of the Starship made a safe ascent and landing earlier this month. The reusable vehicle could be a "game-changer for space travel," the BBC reported.

Former Trump advisor Michael Flynn said the US should have a coup like Myanmar, where the military overthrew the democratically elected government
- Former national security adviser Michael Flynn spoke at a QAnon conference in Dallas this weekend.
- When asked about the coup in Myanmar, Flynn said that "it should happen here."
- Myanmar's military overthrew the democratically elected government and has killed hundreds of people.
- See more stories on Insider's business page.
Michael Flynn, who served as President Donald Trump's national security adviser, told a crowd at a QAnon conference in Dallas, Texas, this weekend that the US should have a coup like the one in Myanmar.
On February 1, Myanmar's military overthrew its democratically elected government and arrested its leaders. The coup immediately sparked protests across the country, prompting the junta to launch a campaign against its own citizens.
Upwards of 800 Burmese people, including at least 40 children, have been killed, according to Myanmar's Assistance Association for Political Prisoners. More than 4,000 people have been arrested.
Flynn, who has become a prominent figure in the QAnon conspiracy theory, was a main attraction at the event, held at the Omni Hotel in Dallas.
In a video shared on Twitter, an attendee asks Flynn: "I want to know why what happened in Myanmar can't happen here."
The crowd immediately cheers, followed by Flynn's response: "No reason. I mean, it should happen here."
-Mamie 😌 (@MC_Hyperbole) May 30, 2021
QAnon communities have praised the Myanmar coup and endorsed the idea that it should happen in the US, according to Media Matters for America.
In 2017, Flynn pleaded guilty to lying to the FBI about his communications with Russia. He later accused the Justice Department of entrapment and moved to withdraw his guilty plea. In November, Trump pardoned him.
