A Burundian asylum-seeker who fled the US explains why he left behind everything he knew to reach safety in Canada

  • America's immigration debate has largely revolved around the country's southern border in the last two years — but one tiny road leading from the US to Canada has become a small-scale immigration controversy of its own.
  • Migrants from around the world have been coming to a rural village in upstate New York for a chance to cross the border into Canada and seek asylum.
  • One of those migrants, Blaise Kidasharira, told INSIDER about the conflict he fled in Burundi, and the fears that prompted him to fly to the US, where he headed straight for the Canadian border.

CHAMPLAIN, NY — Blaise Kidasharira stood at the end of Roxham Road, carrying everything he owned in two small bags.

It was barely dawn on a freezing October morning, and before he explained why he was fleeing for his life, he took a moment to apologize for his poor English, which was better than he realized.
