Leadership lessons from Game of Thrones

Columbia Business School lecturer Bruce Craven teaches leadership using stories from Game of Thrones and George R.R. Martin's fantasy series A Song of Ice and Fire. Decisions made by the leaders of the land of Westeros sometimes result in devastating consequences, but the characters who survive learn to improve their actions and navigate the challenges in front of them. In our own world, we may not face literal execution, but we often must make decisions with similarly wrenching tensions and unpredictable results. We have more capability to manage this than we may think -- especially if we can keep our perspective. Queen Cersei is wrong when she says, "When you play the game of thrones, you win or you die. There is no middle ground." There is a middle ground: the realm of thoughtful decision making.
