American Airlines on Monday said it would cancel around 80 flights per day for the rest of June, according to a FOX News report.
This is an increase from the airline's previous statement to ABC News, which said it may cancel at least 50 to 60 flights per day through June.
American also told FOX that it would adjust a "fraction" of its flight schedules in July by cancelling around 1% of its daily operation in that month.
The airline first told the Wall Street Journal on Sunday that about 1% of the carrier's flights in July would be cancelled. This would help manage the surge in travel demand as the labor shortage and bad weather disrupts operations at some of its hubs, it said.
An American spokesperson told The Journal that the flight cancellations would bring "additional resilience and certainty" to its summer operations.
"(We) feel these schedule adjustments will help ensure we can take good care of our customers and team members and minimize surprises at the airport," the company said in a statement to Reuters.
The airline said its cancellations were targeted at impacting the smallest number of customers "by adjusting flights in markets where we have multiple options for re-accommodation."
American Airlines canceled hundreds of flights last weekend, including 123 flights on Saturday, 178 on Sunday, and 97 on Monday, due to staffing shortages and maintenance issues.
Airlines and other transportation operators have seen a quick ramp up in demand as COVID-19 vaccination rates in the US increased and travel restrictions lifted in recent weeks.
According to data from the US Transportation Security Administration, nearly 50 million airport passengers were registered in May, up 19% from April. So far in June, the TSA has registered nearly 35 million air passengers.
American Airlines said the incredibly quick ramp up of customer demand also came at a time when bad weather caused multi-hour delays over the last few weeks, disrupting flight and crew work hours.
The company said some of its vendors were also struggling with labor shortages, impacting the airline's operations.
