What's going on today:
- Kinzinger wants "real conservative values." Adam Kinzinger says the GOP shouldn't win a majority in the House if it's "pushing division and pushing lies." Kinzinger said he wanted to see "actual Republican values" in a GOP majority, adding that the GOP must "turn away from conspiracy."
- "If it is as terrible as people say it is, it will be destroyed by the Supreme Court." A GOP Senator said the Supreme Court will eventually 'swat' away Texas' restrictive abortion law. "People are using it to gin up their base to distract from disastrous policies in Afghanistan, maybe for fundraising appeals," Louisiana Sen. Bill Cassidy said.
- Israel re-opening borders. Israel is set to reopen its borders to tourism in 2 weeks despite a resurgence in COVID-19 cases. Incoming visitors will need to be fully vaccinated within the last six months, or have a booster shot, and provide a negative PCR test.
- Minnesota officers destroyed evidence. Minnesota State Patrol officers purged their texts and emails after they were sued over their response to George Floyd protests, according to witnesses. Witness testimony on July 28, 2021, revealed that troopers knew a lawsuit had been filed before deleting relevant emails and text messages.
- An epidemic of school closures. COVID-19 cases rose among students as schools began to reopen in late July. Since then at least 1,000 schools have closed. In Mississippi, where schools reopened in early August, 12,000 kids tested positive for COVID-19 that month alone.
