  • Twitter is closing two offices in India located in Delhi and Mumbai, per Bloomberg.
  • Staff in those offices have been told to work from home, despite owner Elon Musk's distaste for home working.
  • The billionaire has shut down other major international offices to continue cutting costs.

Twitter has shut down two of its three offices based in India and ordered staff there to work from home, Bloomberg reported on Friday, despite owner Elon Musk's well-known love of working from the office.

Twitter closed its offices in India's capital city Delhi and financial center Mumbai, sources familiar with the matter told Bloomberg. They said that its office in Bengaluru — India's tech hub — which mainly houses engineering employees, remains open.

This latest cost-cutting measure came after Musk laid off over 90% of Twitter staff in India in November, leaving behind only about 12 employees. Around 70% of the layoffs affected staff on product and engineering teams — roughly 140 people.

Meanwhile, staff working in marketing, communications, and public policy in India were also fired, per Bloomberg

Twitter did not immediately respond to Insider's request for comment about the new measures.

At least a dozen international Twitter offices have already been closed or face closure, including some in Hong Kong, the Philippines, Mexico, Africa, Australia, and South Korea, sources familiar with the company told Insider's Kali Hays previously. Most of its offices in Europe are also going to be closed, the sources added.

Office closures form part of Musk's plans to save the company from bankruptcy. This included shrinking the number of offices around the world, mass layoffs, shutting down certain features on Twitter, and ending benefits and perks like free lunch.

Musk is notorious for his unwavering opposition to remote working policies and told Twitter staff in the US to work from the office full-time or hand in their resignations — reversing former CEO Jack Dorsey's establishment of permanent remote working policies in 2020.
