A majestic Scottish castle steeped in royal history is on the market for $3.8 million – take a look.
Brechin Castle in Angus, Scotland, is on the market for offers over $3.8 million.
The castle was originally built in the 13th century and was later reconstructed in the 18th century.
It has 16 bedrooms, magnificent gardens, and a rich history.
Looking for somewhere to live that's fit for a king? Even though Buckingham Palace is taken, the enchanting Brechin Castle in Angus, Scotland, is up for sale.
One of Scotland's "most significant and historic castles," the estate has been available for offers of over £3 million (about $3.8 million).
Built on the site of a defense fortress that once belonged to Scottish kings, the castle dates from the 13th century. The castle standing today was reconstructed in the early 18th century. Take a look inside:
Brechin Castle offers 16 bedrooms with eight reception rooms full of portraiture. The ground also includes three other estate houses and cottages.
The castle and its beautiful gardens, now belonging to the Dalhousie family, are "steeped in history," according to Dalhousie Estates.
Centuries ago, English King Edward I received the submission of King John Balliol of Scotland on the grounds in 1296. In 1303, Sir Thomas Maule defended the castle against the English for several weeks until he was killed and it was surrendered. After the castle was bought by Patrick Maule, 1st Earl of Panmure, in the mid-17th century, it was remodeled into what it is today, according to Dalhousie Estates.
At the entrance of the castle, there are the original paneled walls with columns that were added after the initial restoration, according to estate agency Savills.
There is "intricate craftsmanship" throughout the drawing room. Above the fireplace are the crests of the families associated with the ancient castle.
Large windows in the dining room — fitted in a 17th-century style — overlook the River South Esk.
The castle has 70 acres of land and stands above the River South Esk, making it a perfect place for salmon and sea trout fishing.
The castle's walled gardens are considered "one of the finest and most important private gardens in Scotland," according to the real estate agency. Azaleas and rhododendrons bloom in nearby woodland paths in the spring.
Despite its size, the castle "lends itself well to being both a family home and hosting large gatherings in grand style," according to the listing.
