McDonald's restaurants in multiple countries have been hit by a technical outage that leaves them unable to process orders.

"We are aware of a technology outage currently impacting our restaurants nationwide and are working to resolve this issue as soon as possible," a spokesperson for McDonald's Australia told BI on Friday. "We apologise for the inconvenience and thank customers for their patience."

A similar statement was also issued by McDonald's New Zealand, per The New Zealand Herald. One staff member told the New Zealand newspaper that they weren't able to take or receive orders because the computer screens weren't functioning.

McDonald's Japan said in an X post on the same day that it was experiencing a "system failure" as well.

"We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause and ask that you please wait for a while until the service is restored," the X post continued.

Outlets in Hong Kong and Taiwan appear to be facing similar issues. McDonald's Hong Kong wrote in a Facebook post on Friday that "mobile ordering and self-ordering kiosks are not functioning" because of a "computer system failure."

"Please order directly at the restaurant counter," the statement continued.

According to a statement on the website for McDonald's Taiwan, online and telephone ordering have been temporarily suspended as the system undergoes maintenance.

The issue appears to be affecting outlets in China as well, with the term "McDonald's crashed" becoming one of the top trending topics on Chinese social-media platform Weibo.

McDonald's has more than 41,000 restaurants globally as of the end of 2023.

Of those, 1,033 are in Australia and 170 in New Zealand. It has 5,903 locations in China, 2,982 in Japan, 254 in Hong Kong, and 409 in Taiwan. It's not immediately clear how many of those locations are affected by the outage.

This is a developing story. Please check back for updates.
